This paper will analyze and discuss the definition of addiction and the causes, effects and treatment of this growing problem in every society. Definition of Addiction Addiction begins when something is developed as a habit and progresses fro there. It always ends up giving a chemical imbalance in a person’s body. It combines psychological state, moral dilemmas, pharmacology and discourse in an awkward manner (Hammersley Reid, 2002, pp.7-30). In today’s generation the concept of addiction is associated with the terms: â€Å"drug dependence† and â€Å"substance abuse† (Hammersley Reid, 2002, pp.7-30). In addition to the aforementioned definitions, addiction is also considered as a chronic, dangerous and dramatic condition of the physical and psychological state of well being. Addiction also deals with issues of control (Hammersley Reid, 2002, pp.7-30). According to McAdams (1993), addiction has the following criteria: (1)  Ã‚   Substance or alcohol abuse can lead to quicker and easier addiction. (2)  Ã‚   Addicts usually commit crime to support their habits. (3)  Ã‚   Psychoactive effects. (4)  Ã‚   Health damages and death. (5)  Ã‚   Ruthless criminals are the main suppliers of addiction paraphernalia. (6)  Ã‚   It has a long term effect and may become permanent. (McAdams, 1993). Causes of Addiction The causes of addiction have many complexities. The exact cause is hard to identify but the primary cause of it is moral weakness. Overindulging to something makes an individual an addict. The reason behind these depends on the kind of substance taken. On the case of drugs, there are reasons like to forget the pain that they are feeling or to suppress the sickness that they are experiencing. In the case of alcoholism, addicts usually drink to temporarily escape from reality. Consumption of alcohol, drugs or other addictive things is caused by the lack of resistance to peer pressure and out of curiosity (Armstrong Costello, 2002, pp. 1224-1239). Most addicts are in the stage of formation or those who are below the social ladder (Armstrong Costello, 2002, pp. 1224-1239). There are also individual cases of addiction caused by broken families, domestic violence and delinquency that lead them to addiction. Improper teaching from educational institutions may also be considered as one factor of addiction. Social pressure is a major factor in addiction (Armstrong Costello, 2002, pp. 1224-1239). No matter what standpoint of a person is about abstinence, he/she is more likely to become an addict once the pressure of friends and colleagues consumed him/her.   The enjoyment of consuming alcohol or drugs made an addict forget about problems and burdens. Types of Addiction There are two basic types of addiction. First is physical dependence and the second one is the psychological dependence. Physical Dependence The state of habitually using drugs often leads one to addiction. Once drug usage is withdrawn by an addict, it will cause something negative for him/her (McAdams, 1993). On the other hand too much dependency is really bad for one’s health. This type of addiction has symptoms of high blood pressure, tremors and sweating. If an addict failed to get a dosage of the drugs that he/she is dependent on, it will reflect something atrocious on his/her physical state. Life threatening situations are at hand like heart attack and sudden death (McAdams, 1993). A physically dependent addict always compulsively needs for the substance that he/she is hooked into. Withdrawal symptoms often characterize this type of addiction. Continuous addiction is motivated by physical dependence and the substance used by addicts usually gives pleasure or reduce pain. Such dependence also reduces the anxiety level of the user and gives an overwhelming feeling.

Free Essays on Writing

My writing experience has been wonderful. I now know the proper techniques of a well-written paper. In the beginning I knew that there were some errors that needed to be corrected in my writing, luckily I have been taught the proper way. There are still a couple of errors that are still in the process of being corrected. So in the end my papers will show less comma splices, fragments, and better intro sentences. In high school one would think that the proper way of writing a paper was how we were taught. But when you go to college it is a whole new form of writing. Your entire paper has to be changed. And in the beginning that was hard for me. Going from high school writing to college writing is an entire new way of writing. In the beginning of the semester our first essay was an example essay. My essay was called The Hardships of the Freshman Experience. Personally I thought my paper was great and that I had errors, but not as many as I saw on my paper. There were so many red lines on my paper that I thought were wrong. But in the end I saw that my errors were really errors. Now if they wouldn’t have been marked I would have continued to write my papers in the same matter. In the first paper I saw my main problems were in using the word â€Å"you† entirely too much. And In papers like that one cannot use the word â€Å" you† so that was one of my main problems. Also another one of my problems was fragments. It seems as though no matter how hard I tried I would always end up with a bad sentence. I now know the proper way to begin and end a sentence. Let’sget started soyou can get started!Do you have what it takes to become a published author?Click Here to Take the Quiz#1 Decide Why You Want to Learn How to Publish a BookWhat you need to decide firstwhen self-publishing a book, is WHY you want to write a book.I encourage going through this brainstorming process as it’s the only way to ensure that you’re 100% committed to writing a book(and youre doing it for the right reasons). Here are some questions for you to decide why you want to publish a book:Are you an entrepreneur or freelancer with a new business trying to get a leg up on your competitionby publishing a book?Do you want to leverage your skills and knowledge to become a paid speaker or coach?Do you have a well-established business and you want to write a book to diversify your income streams and land speaking engagements?Or do you already have a successful story, and want to build an asset that will share the knowledge and skills you’ve gained over decades of experience?Do you have a larger number of book ideas or prompts you need to start writing?Action Plan: Come up with at least 10 valid reasons why you want to write a book. Use the questions above as a starting guide to brainstorm.#2 Write Your BookIf you’ve ever tried to start writing a book, you might have had moments where you’ve stared at a blank page for hours with nothing to show for it. Feeling frustrated, you resort to procrastinating and get nothing done! This is normal, writing a book is hard work.In fact, coming up with a book idea in general can be very tricky. But in order to start writing your book, you must develop a writing process. Here’s are some effective ways to write a book worth self-publishing: Buy a calendar. The best way to have your book complete is to have a calendar that schedules your goals per day/week.Create an outline. An outline is like a map of your book that provides direction to your story. It keeps you on track and ensures that your ideas are organized.Develop a writing habit. Condition yourself to write at the same time every day. With this practice, it will soon become a habit that will make writing a book automatic.Get an accountability partner. You can hold each other accountable to write and finish your by your draft done date.Build your writing environment. Yes, this can be a blanket for if you choose to use build literally or you can simply find an area where your head is clear, there are no distractions, and where you can write in peace. To learn more tips on how to write faster, here’s a tutorial video of the simple process I use to write over 1500 words per hour: Action Plan: Create a resistance plan! Figure out which methods best filter out the negative noise to get you into the writing process.#3 Get Feedback on Your Book Before PublishingWhen writing your book, it’s important to get as much feedback as early in the process as possible. Its essential to get this feedback in order to improve your writing. Everything from creative writing to factual, non-fiction works needs feedback in order to produce a polished publication. As writers, it’s all too easy to retreat into your cave for a long period of time, spend countless hours writing what you think is the perfect first draft, only to find that a) your draft doesn’t make sense to anyone else or b) no one else is as interested in the topic as you originally thought.Writing tips can come from anywhere and the best usually come from those reading your book for the first time. Not only can a fresh set of eyes on your book help you catch typos and grammatical errors, but a new perspective can give you ideas for tightening up your story and making the theme more clear, likeintheexamplebelow.Giving your book to one (or more) â€Å"beta readers† before giving itto an editor and self-publishing can also cut down on the time and cost of paying a professional editor. You can also use a beneficial piece of writing software like Grammarly or the Hemingway Editor so you can learn as you write!Action Plan: Reach out to a few friends who could provide good (preferably unbiased) feedback, and ask them if theyll be willing to read a chapter or two (or the whole book!) as you finish writing#4 Choose a Book TitleContrary to popular belief, you should never decide on a book title until after you are done writing your first draft. This is because choosing a book title first often results in you â€Å"writing yourself into a corner† because you’re trying so hard to align your story to the title of the book instead of writing what needs to be written.Don’t make this more complicated than it needs to be. The key to choosing a perfect title is: the simpler the title, the better. As you’re brainstorming ideas, always remember to keep it simple.Your title should also be cle ar on what your readers will receive by reading your book. This is because experts state that a clear promise or a guarantee of results will further intrigue your readers. Here are some questions to consider when creating your memorable book title:Is your title going to teach a high demand skill? Can your title impact someone’s life? Can your book solve a very difficult problem? Is it short enough to read in a thumbnail image on Amazon?Does it elicit an emotional response?Action Plan: Once you’ve narrowed down your book titles, send out an email to your friends and family or put a poll up to your audience asking what title they’d prefer. You could also ask a community of other authorswhat they think.#5 Hire a Great Book EditorHiring a great book editor can mean the difference between becoming a bestselling author, or self-publishing a mediocre book. Therefore, it’s important to take as much time as necessary during this stage of the process. To find an editor for your book, begin with your personal network.Do you personally know any qualified editors? Start there. If you don’t, then do you know someone who knows an editor? If you don’t have any luck finding an editor within your personal network, don’t worry!Depending on your budget, you can either hire a professional book editoror hire a more budget-friendly editor from Upwork. But be careful and always check references and portfolios of work.As a Self-Publishing School student, we will also provide you with a Rolodex of approved and vetted book editors who all do a great job, asyoucanseeintheexamplebelow. No matter how you find your editor, make sure you’re a good fit before committing to the full book by paying them a small sum ($25 or so) to edit a few pages or a chapter of your book.Make sure the editor is interested in the subject matter, that they can get your whole book edited in 3.5 weeks or less including back-and-forth revisions, and that their edits are both accurate and make sense to you.If you don’t feel you’re a good fit following a sample edit, then let that $25 go and find an editor who’s going to work out rather than sinking more money into a relationship that might be a mistake.Whatever you do, don’t give upduring the editorial process! If one editor isn’t working out for you or meeting your needs, find another.Action Plan: Find a friend or professional editor who can make sure your book is error-free, and start working with them sooner rather than later!#6 Design a Book Cover that ConvertsWhen it comes to self-publishing, a high-quality book cover is one of the most important elements that will get your book to convert into sales! The reason is that your book cover design is what readers see first and will immediately determine whether they want to read your book or not.Dont judge a book by its cover simply doesnt apply toactual book covers, as much as we wish it did.The hard truth is thateveryone judges a book by its cover whether they realize it or not.So you must make sure that it is created professionally and that it will stand apart from the rest of the books in your genre or category. What makes a good book cover?Simplistic styling. Too much going on will make readers unable to figure out what your book is about. Keep the cover minimalistic and it will convert more readers.Professionally designed. Book cover designers know how to create book covers that convert. They have industry knowledge and have studied what works and what doesnt.Clear title and subtitle. The title on your cover does matter. The easier it is to read, the better. This allows your readers to clearly see what your book is about as they scroll through Amazon or other book retailers.A design style that fits your intended audience. If youre writing a faith-based book intended for an audience of faith, having an overly dark, devilish cover doesnt make sense. You can find amazing book cover desi gners on freelancing sites such as:99 DesignsHappy Self Publishing100 CoversFiverrUpworkPrices will vary depending on what type of service you want, but the end result will be well worth the spend. Action Plan:Find a book designer with any of these sites and your book will stand apart from the rest of its competition!#7 Create Your Kindle Direct Self-Publishing Account Amazon has a self-publishing service called Kindle Direct Publishingwhere you can create and manage your Kindle eBook, paperback, and audio books.Amazon has recently acquired the well-known book printing company CreateSpace and theyre now merged as one. This means you can now offer print books to your audience. If $60 is too much, you can also find people on Fiverr to format your book for Kindle.Just be sure you hire someone who knows how to format your specific book genre.Action Plan:Make sure your book is formatted properly by using the free online resource above or hiring someone who can handle the formatting process for you.#9 Self-Publish Your BookWhen you feel confident your book is ready for the public, you can create a KDP account and upload your book. This is how to upload your book on KDP:On the KDP mainpage, locate and click on â€Å"Your Bookshelf†. Once Amazon finishes uploading your file, a confirmation message will be sent and you can preview the uploaded file to check for any errors. The most common question I get from newwriters is, â€Å"How much should my book cost?†To answer this,my general rule of thumb is to have your book priced is between $2.99 to $5.99. To be more specific, when beginning a launch, I would begin by pricing the book at $0.99 for the launch period. Then I would set the price to 2.99, and I would moderately increase the price by $1 every week and measure how well the new price performs. Once you see a sales dip, that will determine the exact price of your book that will guarantee book sales.Action Plan:Find the perfect price by using this strategy that will attract your readers and best drive long-term success.#11 Form a Launch TeamYour launch team is the group of people who are dedicated to helpingmake your book successful. They should be a passionate group of individuals who are eager to make your book launch successful. Tactics of Conflict- Communication Class Case Study

Tactics of Conflict- Communication Class - Case Study Example At any moment of the day, you might have to deal with the arguments of your lover, the intransigence of a friend, or the unreasonableness of parents. This case study will explore the different tactics in different cases that have been encountered through personal experiences in reference to the communication of the participants found in this chapter Avoidance The tactic of avoidance in interpersonal relationships has its own place and time to do, and also not to do. According to Wilmot and Hocker (2007) â€Å"Avoidance can supply time to think of some other response to conflict† (p.139) since some people basically need time to deliberate how they deal with a problem since not all individuals can deal with conflicts decisively. On the other hand, Wilmot and Hocker (2007) also explain that â€Å"Avoidance tends to demonstrate to other people that one does not care enough to confront them and gives the impression that one cannot change† (p.139). Usually when the matter is of a very serious concern, avoiding the conflict would not be considered helpful on the long run. Here is an example scenario made by Wilmot and Hocker (2007): Brent: There is something bothering me. Janette: I’m way too stressed to talk about anything now. Brent: I’m upset about what you said about me at the party. Janette: You’re picking on me. Leave me alone! Another time! Brent: When are we going to talk about things that bug me? You never want to talk if I’m upset. Janette: You aren’t respecting what I told you about my stress. I’m going for a walk. See you later. (pp. 134-135) It could be understood that Brent wants to decisively be upfront with a problem to Janette. On the other side, Janette does not want to confront the matter immediately. She likely wants to avoid that issue either to deal with when she is ready, or just wants let the problem pass by without further fussing. Either way, both individuals will not see the problem tog ether eye to eye. The tactics of avoidance is one that involves verbal denials, topic evading, indirect or misdirecting remarks, or just pushing back or away the matter. If the problem is nothing serious, avoidance is helpful. But if the matter is serious, avoidance would not solve the conflict at all. Competition Unlike the shying away game of avoidance, competition is straight forward in dealing with conflict. Competition by Wilmot and Hocker (2007) â€Å"is characterized by aggressive and uncooperative behavior-pursuing your own concerns at the expense of others† (p.145). This tactic is usually in favor for those who prefer in dealing with conflicts in a very direct and dominating manner. The advantage pointed out by Wilmot and Hocker (2007) that â€Å"Competition can be appropriate and useful when one has to make a quick, decisive action, such as in an emergency†¦ It is useful if the external goal is more important than the relationship with the other person, such a s in a short term non-repeating relationships† (p.145). Wilmot and Hocker (2007) make this case example: A human service agency competes with others for grant money from United Way. A limited amount is available, so the best proposal for solving a human service problem will be funded. The director of the agency

Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words

Business - Essay Example One of the primary aspects of how globalisation impacts international business is the inter-dependency of international trade. Whereby historically economies were limited to geographical boundaries, having economic systems wholly contained within a national infrastructure, today with the presence of global product trade, it is altering the global economy. For instance, this can be witnessed in China, a country that maintained a very immature capital market until the 1990s as a result of the historical command economy that was centrally controlled by Chinese government. As China’s economy began to expand as a result of government deregulation, GDP and exportation became a favourable activity to ensure rapid economic growth. As a result, in order to become competitive with the rest of the developed world, it was necessary for businesses (once dominated by government) to adopt capitalistic and neoliberal ideologies which allows for capital assets and production systems to be whol ly owned and managed by private business leaders (Degen 2008). As a result of this change toward capitalism in a previously Communist nation, it became more inviting for foreign businesses to establish joint ventures and strategic alliances with growing Chinese companies to gain a foothold for market entry. Government in China no longer owned majority equity stakes in businesses which ultimately led to opening new competitive opportunities for smaller firms that could not previously compete with government-controlled business group conglomerates. As a result, Western management philosophy (as one relevant example) became entrenched in Chinese businesses with an emphasis on human capital development and organisational culture development rather than operating under tightly-controlled and centralised hierarchies of authority. Sammuri Argumentative Essay Essay Example for Free

Sammuri Argumentative Essay Essay Whether it is through the martial arts, the peaceful arts, or their beliefs, the samurai continue to influence life to this day. The Samurai’s ethics are major in Japanese society as well as business; the idea of Bushido exists in society today as the Japanese business ethics illustrate honor and duty to Japan. To be a Samurai was a huge honor and it took an abundance of training and extensive hours of practice. Samurais had to be completely dedicated to their lifestyle; they repeated their schedule day after day: wake up in the Samurai village, meditation, hours of training, dinner, and sleep. Their routine was very rigorous however; it was compensated when they went into battle. Samurais were an elite group of warriors who were very skilled in battle and killing. Many may say that the Samurais were very violent and provocative group, however, the Samurais were always on the defensive. Though the entire movie, the Samurais never picked the fight, it was always the Americans- or in any case, it was never the Samurais who were picking the fights. The Samurais’ code of honor, Bushido, was much like a knights’ code of honor, chivalry; the only difference was â€Å"seppuku†. Seppuku was the traditional suicide after a battle was lost. The leader of the losing team was to commit suicide by carving a figure 8 into his abdomen because he shouldn’t live with the shame of losing a battle. If the man could not complete the figure 8, the leader of the opposing side would cut off the loser’s head. This was all part of honor; however, many people saw it as barbaric and couldn’t understand this ritual. The Samurai were trained warriors and their job was to kill predators so any way they are viewed; they were still violent peoples so in a way it was a good thing that the tradition was discontinued. The weapons the Samurais used were swords, bow and arrows, and a spear; no fire arms. In the movie, The Last Samurai, it was said that the â€Å"sword is part of the soul†. The Japanese took this very seriously; training took up most of a warriors’ day. The samurai rose to power out of the constant fight for land in feudal Japan. They became experts at fighting from horseback and on the ground. They trained in armed and unarmed combat. They wore many layers of armor and used only the sword passed down from previous generations. As mentioned previously, the Samurai were trained warriors and their job was to kill predators so in a way it was a good thing that the tradition was discontinued. However, much like the Samurai, soldiers fighting the war today are much more aggressive than the Samurai and they are armed with much more lethal weapons than a sword. Others may view this as hypocritical that the centuries long tradition was put to an end yet we continue to fight and kill to get what we need; we aren’t even fighting to protect our people like the Samurais were, we are fighting for something that we want.

The Most Common Types of Leukemia in Adults Essay -- health, diseases

In the United States, there was an estimated 310,046 people are living with or are in remission from Leukemia according to statistics gathered in 2013. Incidence rates for all types of leukemia developing in males are higher than in females; males are expected to account for approximately 57 percent of the new cases of leukemia. In all races or ethnicities, it is the tenth most frequently occurring type of cancer. However, incidence is highest among non-Hispanic whites, (13,600) while incidence is lowest among Asian and Pacific Islander populations (7,400) and American Indian and Alaska Native populations (7,300). In 2013, leukemia was diagnosed in approximately twelve times as many adults (43,749) as children and adolescents younger than 15 years (3,605). The median age at diagnosis is sixty-six years old and the median for death caused by the disease is seventy-five years old. The most common types of leukemia in adults are Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leuke mia (ACL). The most common type of leukemia in children and adolescents younger than 20 years is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). In 2010, ALL was accountable for 74 percent of the new leukemia cases in children and adolescents younger than 20 years. Most cases of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) occur in adults. In 2010, CML was accountable for about 3.3 percent of new cases of leukemia in children and adolescents younger than twenty years. Almost two percent of all cases of CML are in adolescents, ages 15 to 19 years. There was a notable improvement in survival from 1975 to 2008. Divided into five year periods, there was only a 34% survival rate from 1975 to 1977 but the survival rate rose to 58% from 2002 to 2008, the difference being statistical... ...Finke, J., †¦ Rocha, V. Child Development Article Reaction Paper Essay

The article How Your Child Learns by Jeannie Ralston, in Parenting magazine’s September 2006 issue, addresses the different learning and motivation styles of children. According to Jeannie Ralston, there are three learning styles: by listening, looking, or doing. Most children will either rely heavily on one of the learning modes, or use a combination of the three. Children that learn by listening typically are not motivated by pictures, but by sounds and songs. Listening children learn through conversation and jingles. Auditory learners need quiet for concentrated tasks and do well when asked to repeat back ideas to reinforce what has been learned. Visual learners often are described as having photographic memories. Children that learn visually learn well from pictures, videos, maps, models, and charts. Visually oriented children often are so captured by pictures on a page; they have problems concentrating on any one thing. Kinesthetic or doing children learn by using their bodies. This can mean a child needs to move around while thinking or use his fingertips to absorb meaning. Kinesthetic children tend to not be able to sit still for long periods and prefer to act out stories rather than hear or see them on a page. Active learners are easy to spot because they always want to be shown how to do things. Jeannie Ralston posits that there are also three styles that motivate kids to learn: the desire to please you; perfectionism; and competitiveness. Earning praise is the strongest motivator for children with a desire to please their caregivers. The key is to teach the child that pleasing himself is just as important. Some children have a driven desire to master everything and be perfect. These children need to be taught that mistakes are inevitable and that productivity need not suffer in light of mistakes. Competitive children are driven by the ‘I’ll show you’ streak. These children need to be taught that there are different ways of learning and not everyone will do things the same way. Both learning and motivational styles need to be combined for an effective early childhood learning experience. Combining motivational and learning styles of children allows parents to effectively support their children. I agree with the basic premise of Jeannie Ralston’s article and feel that most parents do not spend enough time or have the knowledge to figure how children learn and are motivated. Within one family, several children can have completely different learning styles. Children and parents alike are frustrated when presented with the wrong method of learning or motivation. I posit that all children have a combination of the three learning styles, maybe favoring one over the others. In order for a life long passion for learning to be cultivated in a small child, the child needs to be continually positively motivated. Knowing a child’s learning style will allow the parent to formulate learning opportunities that will continually excite the child. If the wrong learning style is presented to the child, the child will quickly loose interest and seek motivation else where outside of the learning arena. With all the current early childhood development research, parents need to understand that learning starts at much younger ages than five when a child starts school. Parents need an awareness of learning styles so that early childhood learning can be maximized. Parents also need to consider that each child will differ and what works for one child, may not work for the next. Parents also need to have flexibility and insight into their children to know when something is not working for the child. Knowing motivational styles will allow parents to ease difficult situations into win-win situations for both the parent and child. In all, Jeannie Ralston gives a good over view of learning and motivational styles. Understanding how one’s child learns and what motivates them will make parenting and learning an enjoyable and bonding experience. Capitalizing on this research is essential for a life time of learning and bringing out the best in one’s child.

Risks of Youth Using Social Media ( Privacy Issues)

Clinical Report: The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families Gwenn Schurgin O'Keeffe, Kathleen Clarke Pediatrics Volume 127, Number 4, April 2011 pp. 800-804 RISKS OF YOUTH USING SOCIAL MEDIA Engaging in various forms of social media is a routine activity that research has shown to benefit children and adolescents by enhancing communication, social connection, and even technical skills. Social media sites such as Facebook and MySpace offer multiple daily opportunities for connecting with friends, classmates, and people with shared interests.During the last 5 years, the number of preadolescents and adolescents using such sites has increased dramatically. Since a large part of this generation’s social and emotional development is occurring while on the Internet and on cell phones, children and adolescents are at some risk as they navigate and experiment with social media, because of their limited capacity for self-regulation and susceptibility to peer press ure. Recent research indicates that there are frequent online expressions of offline behaviors, such as bullying, and sexual experimentation, that have introduced problems such as cyber-bullying, privacy issues, and sexting.Cyber-bullying Cyber-bullying is deliberately using digital media to communicate false, embarrassing, or hostile information about another person. It is the most common online risk for all teens and is a peer-to-peer risk. Although â€Å"online harassment† is often used interchangeably with the term â€Å"cyber-bullying,† it is actually a different entity. Current data suggest that online harassment is not as common as offline harassment (Lenhart, 2007), and participation in social networking sites does not put most children at risk of online harassment (Ybarra & Mitchell, 2008).On the other hand, cyber-bullying is quite common, can occur to any young person online, and can cause profound psychosocial outcomes including depression, anxiety, severe i solation, and, tragically, suicide (Hinduja & Patchin, 2010). Sexting Sexting can be defined as â€Å"sending, receiving, or forwarding sexually explicit messages, photographs, or images via cell phone, computer, or other digital devices†(Berkshire District Attorney, 2010). Many of these images become distributed rapidly via cell phones or the Internet. This phenomenon does occur among the teen population; a recent survey revealed that 20% of teens have sent or posted nude or seminude photographs or videos of themselves (National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 2010). Some teens who have engaged in sexting have been threatened or charged with felony child pornography charges, although some states have started characterizing such behaviors as juvenile-law misdemeanors (Gifford, 2010; Walker, 2010).Additional consequences include school suspension for perpetrators and emotional distress with accompanying mental health conditions for victims. In many circumstanc es, however, the sexting incident is not shared beyond a small peer group or a couple and is not found to be distressing at all (Lenhart, 2009). Facebook Depression Researchers have proposed a new phenomenon called â€Å"Facebook depression,† defined as depression that develops when preteens and teens spend a great deal of time on social media sites, such as Facebook, and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression (Davilla et al. 2009; Sturm, 2010). Acceptance by and contact with peers is an important element of adolescent life. The intensity of the online world is thought to be a factor that may trigger depression in some adolescents. As with offline depression, preadolescents and adolescents who suffer from Facebook depression are at risk for social isolation and sometimes turn to risky Internet sites and blogs for â€Å"help† that may promote substance abuse, unsafe sexual practices, or aggressive or self-destructive behaviors.

Pornography In Media Essays - Pornography, Sex-positive Feminism

Pornography In Media Essays - Pornography, Sex-positive Feminism Pornography In Media Pornography in the Media It started by way of messengers and scribes, evolved through the presentation of newspapers and radio, brought us together with television, and now serves us worldwide via the ever-popular Internet. It is the mass media, and even from the earliest days of its existence, it has contributed greatly in ways that both enlighten and enrich society, and ways that deteriorate and perplex it. It is not a surprise to learn, then, that the mass media is the most powerful source of information we have, and nothing else in todays world influences public perception quite as heavily. Unfortunately, however, most of what is broadcast or transmitted in the news today is with reference to the chaotic condition of our planet, or something else that society as a whole sees as detrimental or damaging. But the news on television is not the only type of media taking the criticism of society. Other forms of mass media, specifically movies and television programs containing pornography and violence have been heavily criticized. The underlining concept to be debated here is that society is negatively influenced, specifically, by these images of pornography and the result is increased violence against women. This assumption, and it is indeed only an assumption, is completely fallacious, however, as no concrete and completely conclusive evidence has ever been formulated in support of the theory. The key premise here is that the mass media does not cause undesirable social behavior and in actuality, the media people should not be dubbed as the bad guys. They simply use their p ower in the most constructive ways possible in order to promote their ratings and popularity. One way to do that is to concentrate on what sells: sex, violence and disaster. Having said this, why is it then, that many in society still believe otherwise; why do they continue to believe that pornography is evil and is a major cause for violence against women, specifically rape? There are many reasons for this misinterpretation and through the following few points, an attempt will be made to show that pornography has very little to almost no correlation with violence against women (of course nothing is absolute in society). In order to demonstrate this, it must be made evident that pornography is not evil and does not cause undesirable social behavior by displaying nude women in sexually explicit circumstances. Thus, it is important to indicate that women are not treated only as sexual objects through the media. This is done in an attempt to squash any traces of evil in pornography. Subsequently, a second point, that some may consider to be completely bizarre, can be addressed; that pornography actually reduces the amount of violence against women. For thousands of years, sex itself has been considered evil and revolting. This is exactly why the concealment of the sex organs and teaching feelings of shame toward human sexuality is so common worldwide. These same feelings of shame are the chief reasons that sex is considered a personal and private matter. Contrary to the beliefs of many, the mass media did not create these settings; society creates this image.(Howitt). In some societies, women have no reservations with regard to living their entire lives completely naked, while in other societies, females cover themselves from head to toe, only revealing their eyes. The media has been bombarded with criticism, overwhelmingly from the female community, relative to the amount of sexually explicit material that is published in magazines and that appears on television and in the cinemas. A common argument against pornography is that the media portrays women as being nothing more than sexual playthings and objects to satisfy male sex ual desires. As before, the media once again, is not to be held responsible for creating this image; these views are products of society. It would be downright absurd to assume that women in this society are treated as sexual objects only because the media releases or broadcasts pornographic material. A magazine associated with make-up and skin care, for example, will quite obviously not be concentrating on much else. Such a magazine would not display pictures of women who mountain-climb or women who water-ski; only images of make-up and text referring to skin

Avoiding the Passive Voice in Spanish

Avoiding the Passive Voice in Spanish One of the most common mistakes made by beginning Spanish students who have English as a first language is to overuse passive verb forms. Sentences with passive verbs are very common in English, but in Spanish they arent used very much- especially in everyday speech. Key Takeaways: Spanish Passive Voice Although Spanish has a passive voice, it isnt used as much in Spanish as it is in English. One alternative to the passive voice is to turn it into the active voice. Either explicitly state the subject or use a verb that allows the subject to be implied rather than stated.Another common alternative is to use reflexive verbs. What Is the Passive Voice? The passive voice involves a sentence construction in which the performer of the action isnt stated, and in which the action is indicated by a form of to be (ser in Spanish) followed by a past participle, and in which the subject of the sentence is the one acted upon. If that isnt clear, look at a simple example in English: Katrina was arrested. In this case, it isnt specified who performed the arrest, and the person arrested is the subject of the sentence. The same sentence could be expressed in Spanish using the passive voice: Katrina fue arrestada. But not all English sentences using the passive voice can be translated into Spanish the same way. Take, for example, Jose was sent a package. Putting that sentence in a passive form in Spanish doesnt work. Josà © fue enviado un paquete just doesnt make sense in Spanish; the listener might think at first that Jose was sent somewhere. Also, Spanish has quite a few verbs that simply arent used in the passive form. And still others arent used passively in speech, although you may see them in journalistic writing or in items translated from English. In other words, if you want to translate an English sentence using a passive verb to Spanish, youre usually best off coming up with a different way. Alternatives to the Passive Voice How, then, should such sentences be expressed in Spanish? There are two common ways: recasting the sentence in the active voice and using a reflexive verb. Recasting in the passive voice: Probably the easiest way to translate most passive sentences in Spanish is to change them to the active voice. In other words, make the subject of the passive sentence the object of a verb. One reason for using a passive voice is to avoid saying who is performing the action. Fortunately, in Spanish, verbs can stand alone without a subject, so you dont necessarily have to figure out who is performing the action to revise the sentence. Some examples: Passive English: Roberto was arrested.Active Spanish: Arrestaron a Roberto. (They arrested Roberto.)Passive English: The book was bought by Ken.Active Spanish: Ken comprà ³ el libro. (Ken bought the book.)Passive English: The box office was closed at 9.Active Spanish: Cerrà ³ la taquilla a las nueve. Or, cerraron la taquilla a las nueve. (He/she closed the box office at 9, or they closed the box office at 9.) Using reflexive verbs:  The second common way in which you can avoid the passive voice in Spanish is to use a reflexive verb. A reflexive verb is one in which the verb acts on the subject. An example in English: I saw myself in the mirror. (Me vi en el espejo.) In Spanish, where the context doesnt indicate otherwise, such sentences are often understood in the same way as are passive sentences in English. And like passive forms, such sentences dont clearly indicate who is doing the action. Some examples: Passive English: Apples (are) sold here.Reflexive Spanish:  Aquà se venden las manzanas. (Literally, apples sell themselves here.)Passive English: The box office was closed at 9.Reflexive Spanish: Se cerrà ³ la taquilla a las nueve. (Literally, the box office closed itself at 9.)Passive English: A cough isnt treated with antibiotics.Reflexive Spanish: La tos no se trata con antibià ³ticos. (Literally, the cough doesnt treat itself with antibiotics.) Some of the sample sentences in this lesson could be understandably translated to Spanish in the passive form. But native Spanish speakers dont normally speak that way, so the translations on this page would usually sound more natural. Obviously, you wouldnt use the literal translations above in translating such Spanish sentences to English! But such sentence constructions are very common in Spanish, so you shouldnt shy away from using them.

What's hot in Information Systems Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

What's hot in Information Systems - Essay Example WebGL allows the client to browse freely within the website and offer an added advantage when it comes to the graphics. Many browsers require plug-ins for some of the graphics to play. However, the use of WebGL allows the client to enjoy using a website with less hassles and quicker navigation (My Opera). It also provides a beautiful environment that excites and attracts a user as they interact with the 3D creations in real-time (Cozzi and Riccio 28). The fact that one can share and publish 3D content at a quicker pace is also appealing. This means that clients can share the product with their friends; hence acting as marketing agents (Khronos group). It is accessible through a variety of user interfaces such as mouse or touch technology; thus reaching a wider audience through different platforms (Nilsson 1). In this era of digitization, such applications are crucial for business entities. The boost that the WebGL performance offers in business should not be underestimated. It is a strong tool that has been recommended by developers from Sony Inc. and Google Inc. among many other renowned software
